Rare yellow gold wedding medal signed by Penin Poncet
Very pretty antique wedding medal in 18ct (750/1000th) yellow gold, circa late 19th century. It depicts a couple kneeling before a bishop wearing a miter, with the Holy Spirit above. On the back of the medal, a bunch of grapes and ears of wheat, symbols of happiness and prosperity. A rare and sought-after medal. The medal is sold on its own, without chain, but a chain can be added on request.
It is signed by the famous Lyon engraver "Penin Poncet".
The Penin family is known for four generations of engravings in Lyon. Ludovic Penin was born in 1830 and died at the age of 38 in 1868. In 1864, he was awarded the title of "Graveur Pontifical" for the quality of his work. His father, Marius Penin, trained a young sculptor, Alexandre Poncet. Penin became Penin-Poncet after Alexandre Poncet married Ludovic Penin's daughter, Marie-Emilie, and the company flourished.
