Rare enamelled yellow gold medal with virgin crest
Rare enamelled yellow gold medal with virgin crest
Rare escutcheon medal of the Virgin in 18ct yellow gold (750/1000e). Shaped like an escutcheon, on the front it depicts the Virgin in profile, and on the reverse it is engraved "N R 18 Mars 1928". The Virgin is surrounded by blue plique-a-jour enamels in two shades of blue (turquoise and darker blue). Early French work from the 1920s/1930s.
Plique-a-jour is a technique for applying enamel, without a base, so that light can filter through the transparent or translucent enamel. The effect is that of a miniature stained-glass window, but it's a difficult technique to achieve.
Condition: Very good, the engraving is partially legible, small indentation in the gold (below the virgin).
