Frédéric de Vernon was a French engraver, born in Paris in 1858, and died in 1912. A sculptor and medalist, he was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1887. At the 1907 Salon, his fellow artists awarded him the Médaille d'Honneur. In 1909, he was elected member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and professor at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux~Arts, replacing his master J-C. Chaplain. F. de Vernon's work is considerable, and it was at the height of his talent and activity that he was abruptly killed in 1912, just after completing the portrait of Professor Dieulafoy, whose bas-relief for the monument erected at the Hôtel-Dieu in Paris remains his last work.
